SpY is a novel product based on a naturally-occurring active ingredient: Spinosad. This ingredient received one of the U.S. government's top environmental honors: the 1999 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.

SpY's active ingredient and formulation make it suited for use in all farm animal production facilities, but especially in bioproduction facilities.

SpY also contains sugar and the fly pheremone, tricocene, to attract flies.

SpY is devoid of cross-resistance to other insecticides used in fly control. It will therefore remain effective against all known resistant fly strains.

Benefits of SPY

Efficacy
SpY has been shown to be 100% effective against even those strains of fly that have become resistant to other types of adulticide control.

Strain Amount of active ingredient applied, and mortality.
250ng 1000ng 4000ng
WHO (reference) 100 100 100
F (multi R) 10 97 100
Sp (multi R) 27 100 100
M (multi R) 100 100 100
Sc (multi R) 100 100 100
G (multi R) 47 93 100

In the above study, resistant strains of fly were exposed to 250ng, 1000ng and 4000ng of Spinosad, with the WHO strain acting as a reference.

Selectivity
SpY is less active against the natural predators of flies, allowing them to play their important role in the Anti-Fly Programme.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
SpY* is sugar-based fly bait containing 1% w/w spinosad and a pheromone. SpY is safe to farm animals.
When applied correctly SpY will efficiently manage fly populations for 3-5 weeks.
Always use the recommended dose of SpY of 500 g/200 m2 floor area of the infested building.

Application Rate
The amount of bait to be used should be calculated on the basis of 500 g of SpY per 200 m2 of the total floor area of the infested building. This quantity should be placed targeting only the infested areas of the building where flies are resting or feeding.

Timing of Application
Start baiting early before fly population has reached an unacceptable level.
If there is an initial high fly population use a knockdown space spray to rapidly reduce the adult fly population. If possible remove any manure or consider the use of a larvicide treatment.

Application Technique
It is important to place the required amount of SpY in areas where flies are resting or feeding.
SpY should be applied using a paint-on application technique as follows:
In a bucket mix 500 g of SpY into 0.5 to 1.0 litre of water and stir vigorously to dissolve granules completely. Use a paintbrush to apply the dilution per 200 m2 of area where flies gather. These areas can be continuous or made up of separate spot treatments. Due to the yellow dye in the bait, do not apply to surfaces where yellow discoloration cannot be tolerated.

Re-Application Interval
In normal situations SpY will efficiently manage fly populations for 3 to 5 weeks.
Re-apply when granules have become dusty, fouled by dead flies, consumed or removed due to cleaning procedure.

Resistance Management
This product should not be used continually against houseflies in intensive or controlled environment animal houses as this could cause control failure due to insecticide resistance. If sequential treatments are required, use a product with a different active ingredient and if necessary, a different control method (such as space sprays).

Use the product effectively:
· Start baiting early – before the fly population has reached an unacceptable level.
· If the initial fly population is high, use a knockdown space spray with a different mode of action to rapidly reduce the adult fly population. If possible remove any manure or consider the use of a larvicide treatment.
· Place the bait where flies are known to rest or feed.
· Do not reduce the recommended dose rate (500 g for 200 m2 floor area of the infested building).
· Consult with the supplier of the product if resistance is suspected. Do not continue to use the product.
