She can convert dietary nutrients into milk with a very high degree of efficiency (over 50% efficient in terms of energy transfer). She feeds her offspring approximately hourly and is often able to support a gain in her litter of over 2.5kg per day during the first three weeks of lactation. At the same time she supplies a complex immunoglobulin package to the piglet in her colostrum. So why do so many piglets die in the pre-weaning period? In the United Kingdom alone three-quarters of a million piglets die every year because they do not get enough milk from the sow. The trend towards larger litters means that birth weights are lower. Piglets have to compete more for space at the udder and their potential viability, particularly that of smaller weaker piglets, is further put at risk by the lack of sufficient functioning teats. The quality of the milk from the udder they have fought so hard to get can vary from teat to teat. CONCENTRATED MILK PROTEINS Modern technology processing techniques, introduced by Volac, make it possible to gently concentrate those natural milk proteins so essential for growth, without damaging them so that they can be used with greater efficiency. IMMUNOGLOBULINS RETAINED The drying process is carried out gently and at low temperatures to preserve the quality of the nutrients contained in the original milk. Even the natural health protecting immunoglobulins are retained, and that really is something special. IDEAL AMINO ACID BALANCE Considerable research had been directed towards the concept of an ‘ideal protein’ which contains the required amino acids in the correct relative proportions to promote optimum performance. The amino acid profile of sows milk is the target and the amino acid profile of FARAMATE has been designed to match this and closely as possible. SPECIALLY SELECTED OILS Research has resulted in the development of a special blend of highly digestible fats which are as efficiently utilised by the piglet as those found in sow's milk. ACIDIFIED FARAMATE includes an organic acid which not only keeps the reconstituted diet fresh for up to 24 hours but has also been shown to improve the overall efficiency of digestion.
